Two guys practicing with a shock blade knife.
A little more stressful than practicing with a dummy knife,
or a felt tip pen (to leave 'hit' marks).

Yes it’s a great tool for training. You don’t need to spend the 400.00 on a shock knife though. Just use a regular stun gun and it’s all the same. I have been using them for a few years now.

The one thing I might add is that when you use it, actually try to stun your partner, or it just doesn’t have the same effect.

I find it pretty stressful with any kind of fake knife if the guy is actually going for me!

looks like the shock knife would be fun to play with, cant really see any major advantage it offers in learning knife defense other than forcing you to respect the knife a bit more I suppose

A couple years back I fought at the Dog Brothers' Gathering with shock knives.
From my own experience, and from watching the other fights, there is possibly a few more seconds of 'respect for the blade', but as soon as someone gets tagged, it's all over.
It just makes people mad and they can't feel the shock after that - very interesting actually!
In an 'adrenal state' it makes little difference with a shock knife, and it's often the onlookers that give the feedback as to who hit who and when.
DBMA started using the shock knives to try to bring more respect for the blade into the fights, but like I said, they have had limited success.
IMO, people have to respect the blade BEFOREHAND, and train that way if that is what is to manifest DURING a fight.
The shock knives can be useful for this in a more controlled environment, and particularly to illustrate the technical 'difficulties' in attempting disarms etc. They are also great for one armed, one not scenarios.

Agreed… where I find the greatest benefit, is the chemical dump that can be induced with its use.

First don’t tell them ahead of time that you will be using one. After going over what ever defensive concepts you are training in, break it out. Then stress the power of the unit, such as 650k volts and rattle it a few times to help build that internal chemical cocktail. Tell them that you will definitely do your best to shock the shit out of them. Sometimes you can actually see the physiological change in their face, sometimes a lack of color (my favorite part).

The only bad thing with doing this is that the person wielding the stunner is at the greatest risk. Because when you ramp someone up like that, they will have a tendency to lack control. I’ve been thumped pretty good a couple of times and my joints put at risk, so be careful. The shock from the stun gun is not like that of a taser. It is very local… only the immediate surrounding area and it’s not that bad.

As with anything new, the first time seems to have the greatest effect. After that, it’s just another tool.

Maija: Guess I was posting at the same time... Bet you had fun with the dog brothers....

Hi Roadkill,
Yeah, The Dog Brothers are cool, very knowledgeable and polite Very Happy , and The Gathering was a blast.
If you find yourself in LA in September, its a fun day to watch, or to participate in.

Hi guys, I can't see the point in the shock knife (no pun intended), if you train without respecting the knife you are training to get yourself killed if you find yourself in such a scenario. I can see it being a fun tool to play with but I can't see it offering much. BUT as I have not used one this is purely my opinion.

The guys in the video are playing with knives, not trying to go for the kill, also when they have the knife they are only attacking with the knife. All of a sudden they stop using the other hand and their legs. Very common mistakes to make when training with weapons. I do not want to be critical as I applaud them for posting the vid at all but outside of the gym, dojo etc , no one uses a knife like this.

Yeah, the vid is not at all realistic.
In general I think it's cool that people are trying to come up with new and improved training aids - lord knows that most people do not respect the blade as they should.
Can't tell you how irritating it is during training to hear people say "well I could take that cut", or not even notice what cuts they are taking. It's a problem because it builds in very bad habits.
Like I said, the shock knife gives you nice positive feedback (LOL) in a controlled scenario like roadkill was talking about, and to point out the fallacies of disarms. Otherwise .....
