coincidentally a turkish chap just contacted me on utube and sent me this

http://video.milliyet.com.tr/videolar.asp?page=1&aranacak=sivas&kanal=0&id=24867&tarih=2009/02/10

this is what Im talking about on the knife offence dvd, recognising the knife draw, preemptive strike before the knife comes out, good choice of tool (headbutt) shame he didnt drop the guy with it or follow through with anything else... not sure about the spinny ballroom defence either

but hey we can all sit here and pick it apart - he didnt get killed, he did well

Agreed. That was nicely done. I kinda liked the discus throw/ballroom swirl!

I love the casual response of the attackie and that spinning he did was funny but worked at the time. I will be adding this one to my video examples DVD for future classes. I have even come up with a name for it... "the tilt-a-whirl". Just goes to show that one can survive a knife attack, (I didnt see anything to indicate the guy had trained and yet was successful). In the end... the guy is walking away still bosting his threatening body language and with a weapon, but in retreat.

Don't you just love reality?

Nice one!

The spinning maybe didn't look well, but it did its job keeping the knifer out of balance so he was unable to stab or slash.

Alternative (roadkill) ending:
...spin knifer onto street....knifer gets runover by bus...

Watching this clip got me thinking about this off balance control caused by swinging the opponent. I've seen it in Bagua in the 'go away' section of techniques (as my teacher calls it). Traditionally Bagua was known as an art to defend against multiple opponents (bandits attacking a good caravan for instance), and this spin idea seems like it could be a good idea for dealing with groups.

Was trying to find some appropriate clips, but here's all I got so far:

This is my teacher. Though the circles are smaller and tighter, you can see the rotation he creates in the opponent. Bagua likes to rotate then whiplash/clothesline.

Of course Judo uses this idea extensively to try to set up throws, and also to stop getting thrown - though with 2 hands.
Here the great Mifune

I don’t think that I would focus on a technique such as the spinning one in this example as a drill for knife defense. I still believe the straight forward attack, attack, attack philosophy would be best. Three rules: Run, Equalize, Neutralize.

It did work and I am glad things worked out for the guy. It’s a great example of how one can succeed in defending empty hand vs. knife, at least this time.

Yeah Roadkill, agreed - wasn't thinking particularly about knife defense, the clip just sent my brain into looking at stuff that I'd seen and had experienced before, and it's potential uses ....

Hi guys

I was really in two minds about posting this link as I wouldn't want it to come across as a blatant plug, but towards the end of this clip you'll see us training 'defence against the quick-draw' which applies to both knives and firearms. The idea is to prevent the weapon being drawn as you close on the opponent as he reaches for it.

In the clip I think we only cover the front draw if I remember correctly, but you can train the drill for weapons being drawn from various carry-sites.

DISCLAIMER: the clip may not impress the hardcore amongst the forum, but we were deliberately training softly for the sake of potential untrained clients. It's not a macho show-off clip, it's a just demo for people to see what they would be learning from us (without being intimidated) Smile

nothing wrong with training slow and soft to begin with mate, everyone needs to paddle with armbands on in the shallow end first, as long as it doesnt lead to false confidence or "super compliance magical chi fist" Very Happy and it doesnt look like your going that way.

ps plug away mate, you'll always get an honest opinion from me

Thanks, Richard.

Any honest opinions from you will be greatly appreciated.

Re the video... if Curran and I were just doing our personal training it would be with a lot more force, but what's the point in showing off for the camera how hard you are and at the same time scare off potential clients. Also, the drills were very slightly choreographed too which is so hard to so at full speed as I'm sure you know.
