Hi, do any of you try to deliberatly balance your mental focus? I assume that some of not most of you run through violent scenarios mentally on a regular basis and as we know this can have a detrimental effect on personality. What do you do to balance this out?

hiya mate,
i try and achieve this ongoing balance by taking Richie's advice to heart about
wearing many hats--the importance of packaging such things is that it is really
critical to take off that hat when it no longer serves you [my take--respectfully
noted as a disclaimer in case my take is anomylous]. i really try and keep it in
the domain of alter ego and 'multiple-personality' like storing. even if it's a simple
tool to make me feel more comfortable, it provides enough stop gaps for me to
work with and emotionally buy into. i spend the rest of the time trying to develop
other 'states'--true to myself but also appropriate to the task: being a dad; being
a teacher; being a husband.

let me tell you that being a husband is a far different personality than being a
fighter...nuff said lol!

whether it's a mind dupe or an amaizing miracle, the emphasis placed on the other
roles provides the balance. cake icing husband; patient smile and nod father;
gentle but firm teacher; explosive nasty prick fighter--and all the rest of it.
it takes constant installments emotionally. monk meditator has yet to re-emerge
but it's on the list of things to do Razz

Balancing?

I agree with Russ's post. Compartmentalization is the big one. When you've got a real viciousness going, limit it to existing in a context of violence and wipe it from your awareness in everyday life while living your normal socially healthy role. Personally, apart from here and so on, I try to not mention or talk about violence except if there's some academically pertinent about the discussion. No posturing or image-enhancement. Sort of analogous to a blade I guess. Hone it to a keen edge and sheath it. Only pull it when you need it. That seems to be working for me at least.
