Flying Attacks...a thought. Empty
PostSubject: Flying Attacks...a thought.   Flying Attacks...a thought. EmptyTue Nov 04, 2008 4:05 am

So i have been pondering the application of flying attacks in real time. I have seen them work, and i have seen them fail. I have never seen a flying kick work in a 'real' violent encounter, usually the person trying to do the flying kick get the shit beat out of them and gets laughed at...an effective hop kick seems to work fine, a flying kick...not so much. Flying knees seem to be pretty devastating and effective in real time. But mostly i have been wondering about flying punches and flying elbows...they work in MMA but would they work on the street? i've seen a short kid jump up and sock a tall/fat kid in the face that knocked him back a few steps, so i think if he would have fallowed up it would have worked. I have one of those rubber human shaped punching bags and while just fuckin around a bit i'll jump up and do a flying elbow or punch which seems to have tons of power. it seems that if you could pull it off correctly it would do wonders in the street especially as a pre-emptive strike; but i'm not about to go and try it out in the streets with the possibility of gettin the piss knocked out of me, haha. So i was just wondering if any of you had an opinion or any experience in the matter. Feel free discuss about flying knees, kicks, or what-have-you aswell...but i am mostly wondering about the flying elbows/punches/forearms/etc.

BodhiKoyote,

Any flying technique in my opinion is a high risk tactic in a street fight and from what I've seen in MMA events there as well. They leave you open to many counters, require great skill or luck in actually landing them effectively, and can put you very off balance.

By the way, you do realize the clip you posted is from the MMA themed movie "Never Back Down"...Hollywoods version of things as it were.

Keep safe and train hard/smart, Mark H

Sometimes when battling ninjas I like to jump from the roof of my chinese house with my robes making a pleasant flapping sound in the wind and land improbably on the top branch of willow tree- it offers NO tactical advantage, but it makes me look DAMN cool and the ladies like it

sometimes a little jump will add some power whilst sacrificing your base to a degree, use conservatively...

in other words, yes you may fly, but not too high Icarus, not too high...

Razz

flopping around like the guy in the video from soft gay porn fantasy flick "Never bite down" is not recommended

its a whole funky skillset all of its own delivering punches, knees, elbows and kicks with a little "skating" jump, attend your nearest traditional muay thai class for more details

I don't know if anyone remembers the Bj Penn VS Caol Uno fight where Caol starts with a ninja flying kick and is then demolished by Bj in 11 or so seconds.
Here's the video link.
