| Hi all im callum, im 21 from liverpool england. I have no training in any martial art, the most ive done is punchbag workouts, ive expanded my leg span but without knowing how to kick its about as much good as a chocolate tea pot. Im a bit lost as to where and what to start with so here goes, im 5'5 and 8.5 to 9 stone. as far as muscle and strength are concerned were talking 0 to none but i can just about isolated bicep curl 20kg on a good day. The reason ive listed that crap is to try and aid any surgestion on where to start? Ive heard alot of people say grappling is essential? Any help on where i should start (other than traveling back to when i was 9 and starting then) would be most appreciated cheers | |

| I suggest that you look at your goals first. What do you want to achieve ? Do you want to build yourself up with weights ? As for other skills Richard Grannon's dvds cover nearly everything that you need to know.

| Hi mate, it's a good advice to join muay thai club...you'll see and learn effectiveness of "surprise, agression and speed", the three key elements(bob spour's SAS) you'll need. But and it's very important: THE SIZE MATTERS! mate...I mean not only how tall you're but what's more useful is your weight and strenght...So, you should continue to go to the gym too and lift some barbells. Personally it helped me much when I started with judo...just could easilly face some black belts.. cheers; | |

| well the goals are clear im looking to advance in fighting skill, ability and understanding. Hence im here not to sound snotty? Lifting weights and the punchbag work out were both nessicary for me to try and fix my back (long story, clipped by car, legs twisted right, upper torso twisted left dragged by the weight of 2 paper bags when i was 16. it didnt hurt at the time so i never bothered with a dr) so after years of back pain which i was told was ''growing pains''... i finaly saw a real dr and was told how to remidy the problem of the muscle that was growing being damaged. so my back is at about 80-88% not painful but my neck gives me a bit of trouble occaisionaly, so i recon almost any martial art would correct the muscle habbit. But im here for the above mentioned, ive had a look into wing chun but the nearest place is warrington which is a pain to get to, i also heard about Krav maga being taught in town but didnt fancy 45 quid for 4 hours a month of training plus a further 40 for joining (apparently it was the transelvainian school of krav maga... didnt sound quite right to me) yea ive got onto the entire tall people synicate lol yea i am warming up to the idea of muay thai, on the off chance can anyone recomend a club in liverpool? cheers | |

| Ok, this is my take on this cal8116
At this point dont think this and that such as not being able to be complete (Full weight regiment, diet, lacking in ground game etc.). Just Get something started! The best is to join a club and train there.
You can read all you want about weights later on, learn to grapple, practice techniques you learned on richie's dvds etc. (I suggest for beginners read anything by Mike Mahler, forget about his kettlebell training if you dont have one just read his articles regarding strength training)
I am not saying all those arent important, but you have time, multiple goals is what wrecks most beginners trying to fit everything in at ones just for the sake of being complete.
As for how you rate your strength level probably shows you dont have much understanding on it! Please dont take this as a offense.
Drop your "strength work". Find a gym now and focus on it. (As i said boxing or muay thai to get your striking base down, builds good body mechanics for what you will learn on the dvds), on your spare time, watch richie's dvd, study the articles on street fight secrets.com, read the strength training stuff by mike mahler or Pavel if you have time.
LATER ON As you get adapted with the gym training, slowly choose a weight regiment (2 times a week for start as beginner usually, read mike mahler's articles on www.bodybuilding.com).
Just stick to the muay thai or boxing for now.

| Loki is right, its better to just pick something simple and follow through with it for a bit for now
Your from Liverpool arent you?
I can recommend http://www.nextgenmma.co.uk
they are training right in the middle of town out of the old 051 with regular muay thai classes- run by Jason Tan and Paul Rimmer, both great instructors, highly recommended.
After you've got your fitness up a bit if there is anything specifically you want help drilling with you can contact me for a private session in Birkenhead at Fitness 2000 gym (its right opposite Birkenhead Central station 5 minutes train journey from Lime st)

| cal8116,
Just to make sure
What i meant is dont be concern with being complete or not at this stage. Just get something started and focus on that ONE thing.
