Hi Richie, I recieved and enjoyed your mauling dvd immensely. The techniques you show are excellent for dominating in that extreme close quarter range. You explain the ideas and techniques well, and would stroungly advise anybody to get and practice the material.

I was about to order the DVD when my training partner Curran told me he already had (and the women's SD one too... maybe he's thinking of having a sex change? ) so my cheapskate instincts kicked in. But we are gonna go through the material and train it together. I'm really looking forward to it.

Richie, let me add, I think its very important that you and other respected instructors get this kind of material out, concerning fighting in very close range. Most people whether criminal or civilian dont know how to dominate in this range, in fact many fear and try to avoid it in favour of the slugging match.Through knowledge and understanding of that range,if a person can begin to feel confortable in that close proximity and can bring the right techniques to bear with aggression and skill,it is suprising what one person can do to another in very short order.if one is comfortabel at such close quarters and knows what to do there, this is a major advantage over one who doesnt. This is often the missing link in many self defence concepts and it is great that you are opening the door to this "kingdom' so that the average man can work well wtihin this all important range. Doing many face aquisition drills at increasing levels of intensity will get the person used to being being so close to another and to the body dynamics and mechanics involved. After a while the tactile sensitivity becomes so well developed that a person can fight blind folded in this range as his hands simply follow the movements of the head and his body adapts to the movements of the attackers body to the point where the attacker has no time or opportunity to regroup. It is very important material and I am glad you put it out there.

it's the first thing i thought of--having seen in on the members side, when my rib got fractured. i thought, oh yeah, why am i training like an athlete--something i love to do when i'm back in form, when i could train like an animal. an animal, that's what makes an impression.
really nice stuff. when my head's on straight, i like feeling this is my foundation, and all the other stuff is for shits and giggles. fook range, lets get intimate, can't hold them off forever so why bother trying.

Dan, Russ, I totally agree. It's true that most Saturday night sluggers like to just throw those windmillling punches, and even the classically trained martial artist or sport martial artist will feel very uncomfortable at this 'extreme close quarters' as I like to call it.
Personally, I live there. I'm the opposite in the sense that I hate boxing/kickboxing style sparring it's just too dicey. For me the idea of trading blows is a fucking nightmare. I do train for it, but my philosophy ulitmately is to cover up and close that gap. Then once I'm in there, anchor behind their neck or tricep or even go for the full muay thai clinch and then get busy on their face. The instinct to retreat and turn the face away (for most people) is so strong that they are practically begging for a head-twist (as Richard does in the clip).
At the end of the day, some of the most powerful strikes (elbows, head, knees) happen at that range. And then there are the close-quarter inserts (which although they aren't the main artillery are serious business) such as biting, gouging, pinching/twisting, raking, shin scrapes, foot stomps... none of these can happen from kickboxing range.
Really looking forward to the DVD! Looks great.
