awesome clip.
when i was in TKD, my instructor [jose alvin jones--aka dr. jones] came up
in the time when you actually had to fight and not play tag. apparently there
was only one tournament that Bruce Lee entered--which he took grand
champion [or so the story went]. dr. jones was holding pads for him to practice.
he [my old instructor] held the position that many good fighters get
a grand championship [his club made it to rippley's so he had a braggart's
heart], he did condescend that whilst holding them for Bruce, he had never felt
anyone that could punch so hard. that took alot to say for this old die hard.
the other story i heard [don't know if this one's true] is that someone challenged
him to a match [challenged Bruce]. and the guy was being all fancy and fiery warming
up in the corner [of the ring]. Bruce was just waiting, still. when the match began
Bruce quickly dispatched the person with only his hands--which made me assume the
fancy foot work was for the movies. but who knows.
either way. i've always liked his intensity and OCD comittment--or dedication, to push
the bar as far as one was able to, just to see where it took one.
nice work ethic even without all the hype. he was the martial artist firstly, the actor
second. he also softened the lines of dogmatic adherence to technique and styles.
it didn't make me want to go rush to buy a jeet koon do dvd, but it lended to that part
of my brain that gains inspiration from people who truly ascribe to rigor, competing with
none but themselves--daily.
