The new fear. Empty
PostSubject: The new fear.   The new fear. EmptyThu Sep 09, 2010 1:29 pm

If you were attacked by a large angry bloke, would defend yourself?
Sounds like a stupid question, but many of my friends (martial artists included) wouldn't.
It seems that most people I talk to think that if they fight back they will be jailed.
Their fear of arrest is greater than their fear of a beating.
Has anyone else come across this suicidal thinking?
They are conditioned to be passive victims.
I'm not a hard man I'm a nice family bloke, but if I couldn't talk my way out of a fight then I will
pre-empt. I would be prepared to justify my actions later.
I don't care if It's a group of teenagers attacking, if I feared for my life I'd go for it.
Has my training turned me into a monster? I don't think so. I'm not stupid and will honestly do anything I can to avoid physical confrontation.
Sorry to go on so long, but after a while chatting with my mates I wondered if indeed I was a nutter!
Anyone know a good clinic? Neutral

That's one of the dumbest things I've heard of for a while.

It does strike me as odd that our natural instinct for self preservation is being slowly eroded.
The UK press seems to tell us daily we cannot fight back against criminals.
I will not accept that falsehood. It's absolute rubbish.
Of course we can defend ourselves.
Problems will arise when having removed the threat we continue to kick seven bells out of
the unconscious git that attacked us, but we know that.
I have given up arguing about this with my mates. Someone once said "It's a shame stupidity
isn't painful." I disagree, for some people it will be.

Stay sharp guys.

It depends, my feeling is do your best not to put yourself in difficult situations. I too am a softy and drink in local pubs where I am known and I avoid confrontation as much as. However I train hard so should the moment come when I am threatened or my family threatened I will deal with it. Luckily this hasnt happened. Everything in life has consequences, you just gotta be prepared to ride them.

That simply isn't the case. The media may be 'selling' it that way, but self-preservation is, and always will be a natural instinct.

How far you go when having to defend yourself is a personal thing, and indeed quite often I'm sure, not a choice at all. In the heat of the moment anything goes, and only a fool would 'tone it down' when the shit hits the fan.

Many, many people do not fight back when attacked. This is a fact, pure and simple.
When the adrenaline kicks in they don't go into fight or flight mode, they freeze.
We hear this story time and time again during our public self protection courses.
Many tell us that their internal dialogue talked them out of running away or fighting.
But they all say the same thing afterwards "I wish I'd fought back."
I am not brave, hard or a sprinter, but I know what fear feels like and how it prepares
us for the confrontation. I welcome the rush.
I'm not surprised that the people on here feel roughly the same as me (or why else would they be here?), but some times it's nice to know you are not alone in your opinions.
No I don't want a f**cking hug. Smile
Thanks guys.

Would you care to expand on this? Where is this pure an simple bullshite? Do you have anything to back this up?

It may be true that people who have no experience of combat, or, who are 'civillians', will do nothing - but where is the evidence?...

However, if someone has a history of training in any form of combat/M.art/Self-defence then it is possible but unlikely that they will sit there like a lemon and get their face mashed in...

Don't you think?

As I said, we run public courses.
We sit in a circle and ask why the participants are there.
We listen to their stories.
These people are quite brave in my opinion to open up in that way.
But, are entitled to your opinion.
