Review of Two DVD Set from www.urbancombatives.com Instructional Delivered by Lee Morrison
DVD1- Fear Control
DVD2- The Access and Management of Combative State
This two DVD course is focused on the psychological issues of Self Protection. The DVDs are taken from seminars delivered by Lee and cover a wide variety of concepts, drills (physical and mental) and visualizations to prepare the SP practitioner for the psychological stress of combative scenarios.
Lee has split this subject into two broad areas of study: dealing with fear and the skillful application of aggression (referred to as the “combative state”). These two separate sub topics are given their own explanations and unique set of drills, visualizations and belief changing exercises on this DVD course.
The Fear Control course has a nice explanation of what fear is and what the difference between fear and its bio chemical side effects are. Lee presents in an easy to understand, down to earth fashion that I found very watchable. It then moves onto some hard/soft skill crossover drills, where psychological concepts are worked into live scenarios so that the student may experience “desensitization through exposure” to the adrenal response.
The course moves at a good pace and the regular change between spoken explanation and then live scenario demonstration keeps your attention.
Combative State Access has a good description of what an effective, useful Combative State consists of and then how to access it. It is specifically broken down into where the practitioner needs to be psychologically before, during and after a fight has taken place.
Again the DVD is chocka with sound advice, good training drills and concepts that will lead the viewer to new levels of confidence in the face of violent confrontation.
For this course Lee has taken NLP concepts from the “No Doubt No Fear” and “Psychology of Violence” series and developed them further. There is also loads of material from Lee’s other research into NLP, applied psychology and the cross over of mental and physical training.
The pace of these DVDs is good and I think what makes Lee effective as a presenter is his conviction in what he believes to be useful to his students/ clients and his passion for the study of the subject. At times during the DVD you may even feel yourself becoming slightly adrenalised as Lee goes into state himself and that state transmits.
You get a sense that Lee knows what he is talking about and just as importantly knows exactly what he wants to say. The course and its presentation feels very much like it has a strong direction and sense of purpose.
I think this two DVD set works both as an excellent extension of the study of this Combative Psychology subject for those already familiar with it ; and yet is understandable and jargon free enough to be an effective introductory reference for those new to the field.
All in all, excellent cutting edge instructional material in an aspect of the field of SP that is gaining more and more attention.
