| hello guys , im sure you experience the same many times, if you train, and a lot in awareness, people dont like to fight you, many time if i go out, even the doormen step away, and let me in without any search, or whatever, in the club nobody likes to go aggresive on me and my friends, but in this way, i never had a fight in a long time! sometimes i went to different dojos, and make some fun about a strong fat guy or something, nobody likes to fight. maby its an advantage, but theres allways a stronger better fighter, so mayby its more usefull to look like an nerd, and nobody expect anything from you, and you have the advantage of surprise, and more oppertunetys to have a fight sometimes. what you guys think, in a real street situation, its better to look like a nerd, or a little bit scary? | |

some people have taken the piss as they think i look soft, or used to. but they got really taken by suprise!!! lol
but i think its best to down play yourself as if your underestimated you'll have more of an impact if someone tyakes you on!

| yeah man, sometimes i do, in every dojo is some strong guy who beat up smaller guys, i like to learn from him, and not in a training way, but in a more realistic setting, so get him a little bit angry first | |

| lol i think hitting him in the face on the reg will sort that!
i remember there was this gym who was a bit of a hard nut from the area, a bully really, and he came to our judo school to, quite litterally he said this to the teacher, who is Matt clampner the uk team coach and pres of russian martial arts in the UK, a HARD MAN!!!, "to kcik some arse and show em that it dont work!". with that he smiled and said join in the class for the warm up. he was nackered by the half way point and matts going "come on we've not started yet and your going to show us aren't you?" anyway when it came to the techniques section he's throwin punches! he's paired up with me and my best mate and we're like "what the fuck you doing?". so matt came over and said to us. "lad's you wantt o really show him what will happen if he does that?!" we knew what he meant and so went back with matt. matt says to him "right you'll take on one lad and when its time you'll stop and take on the other int he next round. you good with that?" "yeah will be easy!" he replies. matt knew that his cardio was to shit and your taking on a fresh guy after a good roll. so matt sorted us out with some 'kanpo gloves' the kind sifu bruce lee wore at the beginning of "enter the dragon". and we're off. i took first session and made him look really bad! he couldnt get close and we're tradign a few blows. he then rushes forward into one the best hip throws ive done. on his back and i goes for the GI choke. grabs his right collar and pull it 90degrees toi the left, sit on his chest and punched him twice. "TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!" shouts matt. so i step off and my mate chris hands him a can of coke. "NEXT ROUND....BEGIN!" and thats it, chris went for him. and just did what he wanted. showed him up good style! "TIME!!!". mat comes over and asks this guy at the end of this bad showing up we gave him "so what you think then? you find it easy or was you trying?" he knew right off he stepped into something he couldnt control. and we never saw him again.
so i think that people who THINK they're hard and really arent should leave their ego at he door. LOL

| personally I turn up to martial arts classes to train, fragile ego'd men and women who attend to prove something are a nuisance... but then martial arts do attract insecure folk and I have seen many people fuelled by eating of the "agenda sausage" many times in training over the years, they are best avoided I always think if you want to fight do it in an unambigous context, its shitbag cowardice to steal sly digs on people in a martial arts class when they are being compliant and have been good enough to lend you their body for a training session- if you want to fight them call them out, dont be a snide my advice would be if you want to prove a point and assert your ego try porn, politics or stand up comedy, leave martial arts alone - Quote :

what you guys think, in a real street situation, its better to look like a nerd, or a little bit scary? in terms of real self protection its generally better the greater element of surprise you have on your side, but then again in real self protection you dont lure people into brawls to create an "opportunity for a fight" for doorwork I think its better if you look the part, for normal SP its better to be the "grey man"

| i teach martial arts, and my students are on a point that we got stuck, so sometimes we go to a dojo and try to see if there good fighters there, and if they maby wanna join our training. not about ego, but about growing in effective fighting in holland we have only mma, wing chun, and kickboxing, and some krav maga and systema, so im allways looking for good training partners. if i check you tube it seems people from the uk and states train way more effective. i like to train the same way also i dont care if i get my ass kicked, i even like, because i know i can learn from that guy. all the talking, i like more the action im still young | |

| i always leave ego at the door. espec if i go to a new training place. even thogh im pretty well rounded i go in a novice because each place has a slightly different way of teaching. i lke that.
does anybody else do that?

what you guys think, in a real street situation, its better to look like a nerd, or a little bit scary? OK as a newcomer to this forum can I lend my thoughts. To look like a nerd when you are a handy fighter is quite difficult. Anyone with a sense of awareness will be weighing up the situation, surroundings and chcecking out the "nerd". Door staff are experts at this.. they can tell by the posture / stance, athletic build and confidence of aperson. Also if a guy is after a fight or out to pick on someone, often the nerds will be left drinking spirits at the bar - they aren't a challenge and wont make you look hard if you pick on them! I always remeber the expression take out the big guy first. The people that worry me most are the stone cold sober, 5feet 8inch tall, probably ex-services and quiet who are also looking as sharp as mustard in the alertness area - if they look like they are in a bad mood I watch out. Of course if you are a massive build, scarey looking person then people will avoid you incase you do some damage in that case it wil be hard for you to look like a nerd anyway unless you are sporting pig tails and are pissed ! PS. I realise you are mainly talking about training sessions at other places where you are unknown, etc. but I feel the same applies. Sharky

| Sharky said/// Of course if you are a massive build, scarey looking person then people will avoid you incase you do some damage in that case it wil be hard for you to look like a nerd anyway unless you are sporting pig tails and are pissed ! ...perhaps with trousers inside out and a dolly in one hand on the other end of it, not the experts on the door but the main stream presumptious arseholes looking for instant gratification...that lot might just be fooled. i had a mate in my late teens who'd wear a sweater to cover up the multi coloured map of tatts on his arms...his expression looked a wee bit slow paced and unconvincingly warrior like. one word, look, or whatever...and this geek [one of his monikars] would launch pre-emptively into people--glass to the head, etc...wailing slightly big loggish arms. he tended to demolish people. he was undoubtedly an arsehole who didn't need to be fighting as often as he did...but {omitted name}-the-geek, as he was called in DC did more damage for his nerdy look than anyone i've ever met. he even sabotaged a karate tournament--taking an arm of a chair to one of the black belts and being chased like a stark raving lunatic down the road by loads of men in gi's--ultimately outrunning them and ending up at my security job [laughing hysterically, thrill junky that he was] for a break and chance to confess. at least one example of 'nerd' equals 'bad'ass--or bad asshole | |

| the only wrong thing here can be to look like a tiger but actually be a kitten...
but then again, I know people who have gotten away with things on looks alone for years
I dont think, in an SP context, you should ever deliberately look or act in anyway like you are looking for a fight-
looking like you train, sporting a confident, assertive and friendly demeanour, staying switched on whilst having a good time should keep you out of trouble ...and improve your love life
a group of scally twats tried to steal a leather jacket off a young lad I was out with last night, I had only just met this group I was out with 2 hours earlier (I was actually out with a female friend who introduced me to them, long story)
this happened because: they drank too much, acted like soft targets and insisted on walking through a bit of town at a bad time of night which I told them not to (paying for a black cab and avoiding the shit would of cost a fiver)
and so I was forced to get involved in a situation not of my making involving people I didnt really know
my point?
roll out the tired old cliche: prevention is better than cure
"looking the part" comes right far down on the list of ways of avoiding fights (but it is on the list), its boring old 'awareness and avoidance' that wins again
man, REAL self protection is boring... planning your routes, avoiding trouble spots, verbal confrontation and de escalation, self assertiveness, control and restraint techniques.... YAaaaaWN!
where was the need for the throat chopping and nerve pinching and slick gun disarming Ive been training myself in?
real life is dull | |

| Richie good points.I love the expression I see on some peoples faces when i tell them, sometimes the highest form of self defence is running away. That quickly shows me who is in class to learn how to "kick some fucking ass man" and those whio are there for the right reasons. | |
