Being Canadian I've always thought of hockey fights as great "alive" type sparring for self protection. The ISR Matrix crew have started using hockey fight techniques in their "Clinch with Cloth" close quarter tactics. A clip is here -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKQHm32O33w
The clip below is a compiliation of Rick Rypien's scraps. Rypien is a hockey player whose fight skills make up for his size. Rick Rypien compilation

Really good that. I've been wanting to ask where i train if we could do a jackets night. cold weather drawing in & I like to practice in what i generally wear in the real world. Trained in sandals and shorts quite a lot of the summer. lightweights & jeans for the winter.

The ISR Matrix folk promote 3 separate programs, LE Law Enforcement, PM Physical Managment and AF Armed Forces. There are 2 DVD sets currently available for both the LE and the PM programs. The AF program is the DVD pending.
Paul Sharp and Luis Guiterrez founded the ISR Matrix, Mr. Sharp is a cop and a Straight Blast Gym coach and Mr. Guiterrez is a VP with Straight Blast Gym.
As was noted the DVD's are pricey. I have the PM DVD set and found the content good, clearly laid out and well worth the price.

Rypien is definitely one of the better fighters in the league, maybe the best pound for pound at the moment.
He's 5'10", 170lbs , and he's consistently going up against guys well over 6 foot...
like here vs. Zack Stortini, who is 6'3'' 238 lbs.
Milan Lucic might be the best fighter in the league overall. He's 6'4'' 220lbs, but also seems to actually have a plan in a fight.

This is sport? The fistfights look like a trial on on the old itv Gladiators. You Canucks are crazy. Good use of hand anchoring

Crazy? Guilty as charged
Tough punching straight into the helmets though. Sometimes players will willfully remove their helmets in an agreement prior to the fight. Rypien has broken his hand in a fight before too.

lol!
Russ, the ironic thing is there in Washington, you've got one of the best teams in the league right now with the most exciting player in the game, Alex Ovechkin.

Hockey fights aren't as common or as haphazard as they seem, there are alot of unwritten rules Usually both participants are willing and have some skill fighting, it's rare that a tough guy and a pure finesse player drop the gloves and go. The safety valves are generally all in place for hockey fights; awareness consent and preparation; as soon as players fall to the ice, the officials usually intervene and both combatants let up on the pressure. Fight styles vary usually dependent on skills and size/strength. Some larger fighters like to index(hold on) and keep the opponent more to the outside as they hit, some need to get inside, some get a few quick shots in then pick up the other player, dump them, and let the officials break it up. The key element to being a good hockey fighter is having great balance and weight distribution on your skates. I fought often when I played hockey(Jr B/C level) even though I was small and played defence.
The funniest thing is, I don't know of ONE hockey goon who doesn't believe, that if only given an opportunity, they could be more of a finesse player and not have to rely on their fighting skills to earn and keep their playing time. (except in my case it was true )

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA' HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
THAT'S F&*KING AWESOME
thanks for the education DMB/NIX,
i love the commentators--who prove that it's part boxing and part hockey, by speaking competitively to how the game, individual fights, etc...is going
okay, i'm going to ask a really obvious question and try and not seem, erm, common. are there some teams who, erm, fight more than others [he asked hoping it wasn't obvious that he likes watching fights ]?
or players on those teams?

The commentators were absolutely hilarious - calling the shots and all! I guess as far as the refs are concerned it's OK as long as it stays stand up, but the wade in when it goes to the ground. Probably an interesting thing to practice, this fighting with little/no traction ..... Roller blades anyone?
Just so you know, my ancestry is Finnish, so icehockey watching was mandatory at my house whenever Finland/Sweden or Finland/Russia was on. I haven't had a TV for about 15 years at this point, so not any more ...

For sure Russ. That's a completely valid question.
Yes to both.
Back in the 1970's, the Philadelphia Flyers were nicknamed "the broadstreet bullies" because they fought so much and well... were damn good at it. They also won back to Stanley Cups in the mid 70's as well.
Now, in the Modern era, there are definitely some teams that mix it up more than others simply due to who they've got on their team. A team like the Detroit Red Wings have a lot of players from Sweden and general play a more tactical game, thus, they rarely ever drop the gloves.
Typically, you see more fights in a game when one team is losing badly. The fighters have a couple roles. Protect the higher skilled star players, and give their team an energy boost from a fight when their team needs it. In this instance fights are more or less calculated based on the point in the game and who is winning.
but sometimes it's a good way to blow off steam and take out your anger on your opponent...
Last season the Philadelphia Flyer's and Anaheim Ducks had the most fights. The player with the most fights was Zack Stortini.

Yes, there's a real danger of hitting your head off the ice going to the "ground" ... last year a 21 yr old player in Ontario died in hospital after hitting his head on the ice during a fight.
