Pattern interupts.

I was reading in Derren Brown's book about interupting a potential threats pattern. He describes a scenario where a drunk guy comes up to him and said, "what are you fucking looking at (in aggresive tone of voice)?" Derren responds with "The wall outside my house isn't 4 foot high". He then goes on to feed the guy more shit that wasn't relevant and eventually the aggresor ends up in tears.

Obviously that wont work everytime and the aggressor wont end up in tears but has anyone used confusion/pattern interupt to throw off an opponent? What happened? Did you get the response you wanted?

Liked it so much I got the audio book.

I remember on one of his channel four shows, a few years ago where he was demonstrating how to make people act as you want.

He stopped a guy in the street to ask for directions, Got them, started to repeat them back, compelling the guy to give an affirmative answer to each query & then in mid flow, casually asked for the guys wallet before continuing with the close ended questioning. The guy handed it over! Derren continued with his questioning for maybe another 10 seconds, thanked him and then walked off. Chap just stood there for about another 10 before his brain caught up.

Pattern creation perhaps, rather than pattern interruption there.
