Interesting show where they use ballistics gell and bones and such to determine damage of various weapons. This one is An Apache - the greatest stealth fighter in American History, versus a Gladiator - crowd-thrilling killer of ancient Rome

There is a commercial in between segments that you can skip after a few seconds of forced play.

I can't start to explain why or I will never stop, but what a complete load of rubbish. If anyone wants to talk about specifics I will be very happy to do so.

I’m not sure what rubbish you speak of… it is entertaining. Some interesting facts from history, cool slow motion video and shows potential damage from various weapons of the past in a rather interesting way. The whole computer model as to who wins… bla bla bla, I think everyone knows it’s just a computer model loosely based on some sort of D&D formula. So what’s the big deal? Entertainment…

OK fair enough, and it is just entertainment, but having only watched a couple of minutes of 'Pirate vs Knight', I take issue with many of the so called facts. E.g they have a guy (who is a computer programmer buy the way), claiming that chain mail armour was not much good against the bullet or tip of a sword or spear. Well, not much historical armour is any good against a bullet, that's why they stopped using it. (Once the guns got good enough of course). Against the tip of a sword or spear? Well chainmail can be very effective, it depends on many many factors. E.g. the quality of the armour, the quality of the sword, the type of weapon, the man using the weapon etc etc. I have seen experiments done by the Royal Armouries, using slow motion video, showing chain mail stopping an arrow from a longbow, a viking spear and a viking sword that was thrust with so much force it bent into a U shape and back again but did not penetrate the armour.

I'll watch some more and see were it goes, can't see the Apache vs Gladiator one, I'll look around for it.

Just to add, chainmail was never used on it's own. It was at the very least worn over padded clothing and jackets which has a surprising effect on how useful it is. It does have many weakness's, but not was much as these guys are making out. The episode is this one...

I remember seeing a TV program on that - the padding prevents the chain mail from getting crushed into the wound, right?

Yes it does, but more important it helps to prevent the mail from bending too much and dissipates the energy from the blow over a much wider area. It also just adds strength to the armour. It's vital when wearing chainmail. When I saw the Viking sword and longbow video I was amazed, but the Royal Armouries say this was pretty much what they expected. By the way they used both modern made armour and 14th Century armour in the test, with a padded under garment wrapped around a pig carcass. Apparently they have lots of it around... :-).
