Hi Richie,

I have read a lot of your articles and saw number of the video-clips. I do really think it is a good stuff and you are truly knowledgeable teacher who is able to present the material in straight forward way with good dose of humor.

My question is how I could train to develop the skills you are teaching....

I have no previous experience in any form of martial arts and I do not believe I could gain the skills purely through watching DVDs. I have read somewhere on your blog that you give the private classes and this would be something that I guess would be the best way for me to start.

Richie - could you let me know if you actually do such a training and if so, how and where we could start? I would be also very interested with your advise how should I start and how much and how often I should train to achieve any reasonable level of self defense ( I am sure you could advise the training path for me, based on your experience).

If the lessons with you are possible I would be keen to learn more details and to understand to organize it in practice. I do live now in Hampshire, near Guildford.

Looking Forward To Hear From You,

Starting training - this is something I need to do. I can't afford any kind's of classes, and can't afford to go to a gym, something which I have been wanting to do for a while now.

I have some pads that I practise on quite a bit. All I havebeen practising is the knockout punch, and just a full force punch as I odnt know what else I should really be doing on them.

Recently I bought a punchbag and have hung it up in the shed. Not a great amount of room in there, but it will have to do until there is some more free space, and with this weather lately, at least it is indoors.

Also I have some dumbells, but the only problem is I find it extremely difficult to be motivated to use them. I would be much better off in a gym. I used to clean a gym in the morning and would have a go on some of the machines there, and they were a lot easier to use, I felt more motivated to use them.

This is my limit on training, for now at least.

I think that a solo workout DVD would be beneficial to be able to max out what skills you can work on and practice by youself. Many people don't have the opportunity, unfortunately, to train with a partner.

I agree with AR7142, everytime i actually get motivated to find someone to train with. They are either a complete girl about things and wont train hard or in a realistic enough manner. Or i get looked at like a paranoid psycho or something for talking about self protection. Main thing is most people think Karate is the only way to get ready for bad situations.
lol!

Very Happy I agree......a solo dvd would help benefit the people who dont have a training partner.....or a GOOD training partner for that matter. This would definitely be a good seller for you.

A DVD on solo workout's would be great, as any training I do will be solo, unless you count my girlfriend helping me with pads to not be solo.

I wish I could train with a partner. Unfortunately though, I have nowhere to train and nobody to train with, as none of my mates would be into this kind of stuff.

Now where's the DVD on tactical burger eating?

I eat that thing like a lion, keeping my eyes on the others, as I bite into the juicy thing... Cool It is MY burger. It will be defended!

just want to say that both kinds (alone and with a partner) are really beneficial. in my opinion (let me throw this in for good measure).
sometimes training with others recks your confidence unnecessarily--because there's a dogma to the techniques, and what the instructor
is looking for as it reflects him/her as a model. it is very important to put things in perspective. while you stand to gain alot from realistic
drills that aren't sports-like in execution but rather controled violence, you also gain much from training by yourself. it's like a meditation.
it builds you up. it is an essential counterpart to also pressure testing your own game plan. even as a sports-type fighter, i did
exponentially better when i trained on my own from time to time--needing a dojo-dogma break. i came back with an honest muscle
memory of my hard training, and usually surprised even myself. so if you only have yourself to train with, use the time to become really
dangerous on your own terms. it's a great time to work on some stuff that (as long as speed, and violent continuous intent) really does
EXPLOIT your own body. i'm not trying to sound like an expert, i'm just saying i've seen that my brand of personality type really gets
a deeper development from spending time alone and training like a scary person. a sort of meditation, if you will. i visualize more, i'm
thoughtful more, and i'm really not slowing down to a certain pace, or trying to keep upl. i'm finding things that i've either seen myself
use succesfully or feel that i would probably react with for real. i gave up on some things that i do well--in terms of athleticism, but i really
couldn't see myself doing. or worse, i've tried in the street and got f!@ked up for my effort. (example: my kicks are really low now, because
my stiffness leaves my hands too far behind a nice follow up if i'm trying the pretty kicks that are only good for points just as the referee
breaks it up and flags his hand up to declare you the winner. ) ghost dogging it can really get inspiring. use it as a strength until training
partners show up and help you pressure test it.

affraid

Somehow I do not think they will be drooling at anything remotely looking like hamburgers in a while... (and i don't thing saying it's a "piece of cake" makes it sound any easier nearing the end part of the clip Laughing )
