in spite of all the hoopla over the bloke running the show...it's very entertaining, and if it gets me into the world
of some of these guys, i'd just as soon not be a hater. the host is an actor, end of...but the guy's he interviews,
like doherty, really fascinating. i only caught about a minute of it, but intend to stay up late like a naughty boy and
see more.

tah, the little boy in me still eats this stuff up bounce bounce bounce cheers

Russ whats the hoopla over Danny Dyer mate? I must have missed something- as you say he is an actor

I know he got the piss taken out of him by a scottish comedian and cited that as the reason for leaving the show, has there been other stuff?

this is Frankie Boyle the comedian

bit of a dark comedic genius

he was on Charlie Brooker (another comedic genius) show and said that Danny Dyer got punched in the jaw by the UK combatives instructor "for talking like a cunt", the next week it was alleged on Brookers show thats why Dyer quit

to Brits, Danny Dyer's cockney accent seems overdone and reading the utube comments it looks like people think that Danny thinks HE is a "hard case"

Im just wondering if there is any further "hoopla" as RUss mentioned?

it was the feel of it, danny came up on the humor thread before and everyone started chipping away at him and trashing him. as i wasn' all that familiar, i assumed it was wider spread, perhaps it was simple hating. the gist was the, "his accent
gets harder and more working class on the show" routine, as if the actor somehow had to live up to the hardmen
he was interviewing. after minutes of watching the guy, it was clear to me that he was continually self depricating and
giving props to this hard men. so i'm clueless. perhaps it's the pretty boy that once played tough guys thing. people looking
to prove he's from a primped part of surrey or something and not a real cockney. that was it, it was the mockney thing.

who the fak cares? i'm watching the show for blokes like doherty and that devil fella who killed drug dealers, etc... danny
might just as well be an endearing show girl who is pleasant to hear and well spoken enough to bring a good feel to the show. by your reactions, i'm guessing it was some pretty boy hating and closet desires to be considered harder and drunker
and, erm, more entitled to interview this blokes. scratch Rolling Eyes

which ones the "humour thread" Russ?

Looking at the youtube comments, there is some pretty vitriolic stuff there- does he deserve to have the piss taken out him?

Yes...

but only in a good natured way. Very Happy

I think you just gave this issue the Zen stick mate - a modicum of showmanship is to be expected.

Possibly the producers let him down with this one, the advert featuring him doing the "how do you sleep at night when your under the same wooof as some of the countwies ardest men" line was ill concieved

Look at Ross Kemp, he made the tranistion from playing a hardman in mockneyland "eastenders", to now being know for making good, penetrating solid investigations into the criminal underworld. But his attitude is projected as humble and sober.

Now I think about it, the concept was probably "Ross Kemp for the Nuts Generation" (Nuts is a lads mag aimed at 18 to 25's)

The people behind Ross Kemps show (he also interviewd Stephen French aka the devil in his programme on liverpool gangs) probably wouldnt touch a concept like interviewing the individual egos behind the "hard man" books sold in HMV because it openly invites an abreaction... and general silliness.

Why would you give an egos like this oxygen? its just tempting them to show off. Very Happy

at 4.14

that kind of gem is just priceless

Not os much a pop at Danny Dyer, more an insightful criticism of the format and the market that craves this tosh

This is the first time, Danny says, that French has opened his world up to the cameras. Cut to French doing Tai Chi on a cliff. (Never trust a man who does martial arts. Put them in the same coffin as women who think they 'might be bit psychic'.) French invites Danny into his BMW 730 and floats through the streets as though it were a galleon.

The effect of this blankness - and perhaps it's just Dyer thinking rile this fucker and I'll get my ass handed to me in a hubcap, and no more complicated than that, but still - the effect is to render his interlocutor's mouth into a fulminating gaspipe.

Whoever is opposite him just talks and talks and talks and talks. They talk so much they even bamboozle themselves, as though it were all happening against their will, endless, like an exasperated airline stewardess going through her mantra before a collision.

Of course you're aware that a lot of what they're saying is rubbish. As human organs go, the memory is about as reliable as the penis, and these guys are mental to boot, with a history of inner-city riots, crack and torture grated on top. But oh, Danny boy!

see the problem? Danny is accidentally using "Blank Face" on them drawing them into an unintended confessional garnished with imaginative embellishments Razz he is the vacuum drawing out the egoic pus ... mmm

I find it fascinating, obviously being interested in the topic, the market, the medias handling (selling) of it and the psychology behind it

why do we want anti-heros now?

Our man Danny seems to be doing a fine job for the show. Like you said he does good Blank Face.
But as to the whole concept itself - Well, Why do people love it? I'm sure there are many reasons, like we all check out car crashes along the road, love eavesdropping on other peoples' lives and gossiping in general.
Alot of people also like to know important people, I guess feeling that this somehow gives them status, perhaps seing them on TV is almost a good? I also think there is something very attractive in solving your problems with .....'clarity' shall we say ..... like the Ted Nugent clip. So watching is a vicarious fantasy of how we would like things to be ...?

Oh, and those Antonia Quirk quote were golden - hilarious! A style of writing that I miss over on this side of the pond Very Happy

...what she said Smile

two ways to look good in this world, by our own blood and sweat, or by bringing down someone else who has
sweated already Shocked it implies, erm, that our status is higher. as for taken the mic/piss...well it provides an
important pressure valve in the world [agreed with Richie], and would otherwise mean that i don't exist--punch
line slut that i are Shocked

BTW: nice entries--enjoying this thread bounce

PostSubject: Re: bare knuckle fighting   bare knuckle fighting EmptyWed Dec 23, 2009 8:52 pm

Was contemplating the 'why is watching these ego maniacs so popular?' question, and this thought occurred -
I guess in the ancient monkey mind part of our brain, there is ingrained the idea of status. The aquisition of power being the main pursuit in life, and violence and fear being 2 great tools for achieving same.
These guys have obviously succeeded in their worlds as being the alpha animal, so I guess they are worth watching ...?
What occurred to me though, is just like in nature, these 'hard men' aka alphas in their tribes, have to constantly fight for their dominance.
It not like being hard gives you an easier, peaceful life. In fact the opposite in some respects. Mr Docherty has CCTV round his whole house cos someone shot him in front of his front door. His status protected him not at all!! In fact it's pretty much the reason why he was shot at, no doubt.
I suspect the fantasy of being powerful and dangerous is very different from the reality. Just like me, wanting to be a spy when I was a kid cos I thought James Bond was cool ....then I saw The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, and quickly got over it ....

synchronistically this issue has come up a few times in my skype coaching sessions, I am becoming aware that many of my customers actually basically crave the kind of "power" that pro criminals have, without wanting all that it takes to get there AND the shit that goes with it

some folk see SFS as a route to that goal

it most certainly is not!
