Nice clips - seen the last 2 before, but excellent finds for sure!
I have a '30 book on Jiu Jutsu with line drawings of both men and women in period outfits defending themselves against miscreants! Good stuff Cool

Maija,

With your interests have you ever read "The Armored Rose" by Tobi Beck found it to be some good stuff for the female fighter.

Written for women practicing for the SCA, but still has some good stuff about the women's issues for combat. You can
get the book through Amazon, but here's Tobi's website:

Keep safe and train hard/smart, Mark H

Thanks for the link markh.
As a teacher I am very interested in how different people learn, and I have read her stuff - linked to it from Chiron's site I think?
I will say however, that I do think we all learn as individuals, and I am leery about generalizing experiences.
One of the most inspiring things about my Eskrima teacher was his ability to mimic and bland with each dueling opponent/student.
He was very highly skilled, and much of that skill came from his ability to read people, and play them - finding their habits and weaknesses, and then using these to defeat them. Interestingly he also used this ability to teach. Being able to find the weaknesses, meant he could fix them ... and of course the more he fixed, the more interesting his students became to him as dueling opponents ...
Perhaps this mimicing ability links to the supra state idea somehow, not in the emotional sense directly, but more the idea of having multiple games in the playbook .....?

very cool Maija...enjoyed all the clips at different stages and trainings of his life.
i actually enjoyed the artery cut in the last frame the most. with all that skill, a direct
approach is also that much more meaningful if that makes any sense.

like this link too

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjSxwNtNGfA&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_stronger_r2-HM

watched it all and i think i'd have a real problem even fathoming those sickles [sp?], and just about
everything else--i should say for good measure affraid
alot of hand taps and counters--must take some real eye-hand coordination work...some of the
cuts look like a japanese chef preparing a piece of meat, working all the way hand on up Shocked

Very cool. watched the 10 min version, is that you with the dreadlocks Maija? Looks a little like your avatar pic.

Cool training. When you started did you start with weapons or empty hands or both? He must have been an excellent teacher. Someone to really strive to live up to.

Yes, that's me.
Sonny videoed every training session so you could take it home and watch it - he also made a copy for himself and did the same. He truly was an phenomenal teacher and I really miss training with him. The 6 years I spent with him totally rewired my brain.
Suffice to say, I have a cupboard full of VHS tapes of all the workouts, and have been going over them to find the fun stuff to post on Youtube - I'll let you guys know when I post new stuff..

I win 5 bucks. I've wondered if that was you for awhile. Seen the clip a few times & the wheels were turning. Didnt you write an article or something about him & post on line? Or am I thinking of something else?

Great form, any vids you post would be brilliant to see.

I went to an eskrima seminar with Danny Guba earlier this year. Never done it before, my wrists were burning end of the day. Went for a beer with him afterwards (Guy who set up the seminar & carl, who I train under, know each other) Very nice man. We had a chat about NZ, he'd been to invercargill & I never got that far.

Thanks for the positive feedback Smile
BlackOps, I've written 3 articles to date that have been published - One in The Journal of Asian Martial Arts back in 2004 that appears on the visayaneskrima.com website, one in the FMA Digest (Special Issue dedicated to Sonny) on line, and one that Richie kinda dared me to write that used to be on the old Streetfightsecrets web site (the new one does not have the same articles section on it).
So far, all the vids I've put up are here: http://www.youtube.com/user/Rndmflw
Enjoy Very Happy

I remember when I first saw that Dog Brothers' promo clip, I was mesmerized by the paired sword work. I'd seen people do complex patterns, pretty but scripted, and I'd seen sparring, unscripted but usually not pretty. This sword stuff was spontaneous and graceful. I feel lucky that I got take a couple of classes with Maija when I was on a family trip out West. Maija, Rob and I still (sporadically) work on what you showed us. The 2 year old makes things difficult because he insists on joining in, and it's never entirely clear who he's allied with.
